Horizon’s new direct ethanol fuel cell is comprised of a small chamber within which the ethanol solution (90% water, 10% ethanol, similar to wine in alcohol content) is in contact with the cell’s membrane on the anode side, while the cathode is open to the ambient air. Electricity is produced as the wine-like solution slowly turns to vinegar. Once this process is completed, a purge mechanism allows “fresh” ethanol to flow into the reaction chamber, simultaneously expelling the used fuel.
The Bio-energy Science Kit is a great way to find out how a direct ethanol fuel cell works. Unlike most fuel cells which use either hydrogen or methanol as a fuel source, the Bio-Energy Kit is a working demonstration of the conversion of ethanol to electrical energy. The process is silent, requiring no combustion, and can run for hours. Explore the next generation of fuel cell technology.
