One of the most important pieces of medical equipment in the world is also one of the most variable, most versatile and most adaptable to change.

Every first aid kit is somewhat unique; first aid kits at work tend to be equipped based on the needs of the workplace, so one workplace might have very different needs from another.

However, there are some standard pieces that should be part of any first aid kit to protect against common injuries, cuts and scrapes, avoid infection and soothe pain.

What Should Be Standard Issue In A First Aid Kit?

By definition, first aid is designed to be the first response to an accident, so a first aid kit needs to be able to help with common accidents and emergencies in the particular area where the kit is placed.

At a minimum, however, a first aid kit should include the following:

  • Sterile Plasters - These should be available in multiple sizes, and include waterproof and blue plasters in situations where there is a risk the plaster could come off.

  • Sterile Eye Pads - This soft pad gently presses against the eye to help protect the eye socket and ease pain before a person has the chance to receive proper medical attention.

  • Sterile Triangular Bandages - These bandana-like bandages can be used to wrap various wounds.

  • Safety Pins And Medical Tape - They are typically used to hold bandages and dressings in place.

  • Wound Dressings - They should be of various sizes, with large, sterile and individually wrapped dressings ideal.

  • Disposable Gloves - To ensure the sterile treatment of wounds.

  • Cleansing Wipes - To sterilise wounds.

  • Foil Blankets - Typically used to avoid hypothermia by reflecting body heat into the body.

What Should Not Be Included In A First Aid Kit As Standard?

In general, medication should not be stored as part of a workplace’s first aid kit to avoid potential misuse. Even if you store basic medications such as aspirin, auto-injectors for allergic reactions or antibiotics, ensure they are separate from the first aid kit.
